Abstract: An experimental study of the autoionization spectra of magnesium by electron impact is given. Electron impact excitation of neutral magnesium atoms above the ionization limit leads to the states that auto-ionize. Energy loss spectra up to 12 eV are recorded at impact electron energies of 30 and 40 eV and scattering angles of 6 and 10 degrees. The two features at 10.09 and 10.46 eV we assigned to the 3s3d 1D2 and 3s3d 3D1,2,3 states.
