The Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences organized IAU Colloquium No. 173 Evolution and Source Regions of Asteroids and Comets in the Congress Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Stara Lesna (close to Tatranska Lomnica), on August 24-28, 1998. The Colloquium aimed to render possible the discussion of some current problems of asteroids and comets, based on the latest theory and observations. The main reasons for the meeting were:
a) the discoveries of new objects with dynamical characteristics, representing transitional phases between different interplanetary populations;
b) observations of comets and asteroids, providing entirely new kinds of data;
c) the possibility for modelling the dynamical evolution of small bodies on very long time scales;
d) origin of potentially hazardous Earth-crossing objects, essential for the past and future of the Earth and mankind.
